Bob
and Sue's Most Awesome Bike Trip - or
Tasmania
Memories
Memories
from the Trail
Date: Fri, 22 Mar 2002 20:15:28 -0700
What is a day like bicycling in Tasmania? We would get up around
6:30-7:00am. All would congregate in Jude's room for she had the
food and the Eski (cooler) We would make tea and coffee, cereal,
yogurt, bread with peanut butter, fruit and juice. Once we had pancakes,
fried tomatoes, and sausage on the barbie. Now it's time to load
the Average White Van with the
swag, check out of the rooms and organize the bikes and apply a
layer of sun block. Sometimes our mornings were cool and we would
wear legs, arms and vests.Judy would cruise about 10 miles ahead
scoping out points of interest. We would sometimes come upon her
taking photos. Judy paints using the medium of water color. She
gets many ideas from her photography.
Most of our van stops were about food and water. the first day of
riding, we ate Judy out of the van. All of her 10 tins of baked
goods were eaten in 1 stop. She called it a food fest. She did not
realize the calories involved for 6 people. Judy was on it after
that. We had an amazing food stop in Derby for scones, jam, and
coddled cream. One day we were craving scones and jam. Judy shows
up with fresh picked strawberries and and a Boston Bun (date fruit
bread with butter cream icing).
Judy led us to several vineyards, a Lavender Farm, and Kate's Berry
Farm. We learned later Kate had been Ken a year earlier. we would
have a road side picnic with sandwiches, fruit, and what we called
Tasmanian Power Bars (Judy's fruit cake).None of the colored fruit.
it had figs, dates, apricots, and nuts. Judy had a small propane
burner for our spot of tea to make lunch complete.
Sometimes if hunger called, we would stop at a bakery. This is Australia's
version of a fast food stop. There were wonderful pastries, however
the main attraction was meat pies servedpiping hot. Potato, steak,
and oh my Wallaby. Never tried that one. Clive maintained they were
road kill.
Judy would go a head to our destination and sort our rooms. Her
room would always be the party room for cocktails and entrees (appetizers
in Tassie). Once she had a 3 1/2 pound lobster. It was difficult
to be hungry for dinner. We sometimes would stop in fish shops along
the way and pick up seafood.Smoked salmon, lobster. If we got into
a destination early we would partake in a few additional activities.
The guys golfed with barely a full set of 30 year old clubs between
4. They had a hoot. The girls went shopping, we all flew kites (any
opportunity to let out the child within) and a few dips in the ocean.
Sometimes we did chores like washing, cleaning bikes, restocking
food supplies and sun block. As you can tell, our riding evolved
around a lot of food. I will pick another topic for my next note.
No worries!

We
hope to add a page that has favorite rides of some of our local
bike riders. These rides will not necessarily be mainly "back
roads" - but will definitely be much longer!
If you have a favorite route please send me an
e-mail - we will include it on this new page! Please include
photos (saved as .jpg files) and legal places to park.
New
Routes to be Added
We
are in the process of adding two new bike routes to this web site
early this fall.
The areas covered are the upper Merryall Section of New Milford,
Warren and Kent on a 28 mile ride with some great views, and a
37 mile ride through Goshen and Norfolk. Both routes remain as
close as possible to the promise to keep the tours on "back
roads"
